Bearing suffix dictionary: 2RS, ZZ, C3, K, E, W33 and more

A reference table of common rolling bearing suffixes — closures, clearance, cages, bore, internal design, features and precision — across major manufacturers.

Suffixes are everything after the basic bearing number: the “-2RS-C3” in 6205-2RS-C3 or the “E-K-C3” in 22216-E-K-C3. They describe how a particular bearing differs from the basic design without changing its boundary dimensions.

Read this first. Suffix systems are not standardised across manufacturers. The meanings below are typical, widely used conventions — not definitions. The same letter can mean different things for different makers, product generations or bearing types. Always confirm with the manufacturer’s own designation system before ordering or substituting.

For how suffixes fit into the full number, see how to read a bearing number. To split a full designation automatically, use the bearing number decoder.

Closures: shields and seals

SuffixTypical meaningCommonly used by
ZMetal shield on one sideMany makers
ZZMetal shields on both sidesNSK, NTN, Koyo and others
2ZMetal shields on both sidesSKF, FAG
2ZRShields on both sides (older FAG naming)FAG
RSContact seal on one sideMany makers
2RSContact seals on both sidesGeneric, Koyo and others
2RS1Contact seals (NBR) on both sidesSKF
2RSHContact seals on both sides, newer seal designSKF
2RSRContact seals on both sidesFAG
DDUContact rubber seals on both sidesNSK
VVNon-contact rubber seals on both sidesNSK
LLUContact seals on both sidesNTN
LLBNon-contact seals on both sidesNTN
2RZLow-friction (non-contact) seals on both sidesSKF

Guide: sealed vs shielded bearings.

Internal radial clearance

SuffixTypical meaning
C2Clearance less than normal
CNNormal clearance (often no suffix at all)
C3Clearance greater than normal
C4Clearance greater than C3
C5Clearance greater than C4

The micrometre values behind each class depend on bearing type and size. Guide: C3 clearance explained.

Cage design and material

SuffixTypical meaningCommonly used by
JPressed steel cageSKF
MMachined brass cageMany makers
MAMachined brass cage, guided on the outer ringSKF
TNInjection-moulded polyamide cageSKF
TN9Glass-fibre reinforced polyamide cageSKF
TVGlass-fibre reinforced polyamide cageFAG
TVHPolyamide cage (e.g. self-aligning ball bearings)FAG
TVPPolyamide cage (e.g. angular contact, cylindrical roller)FAG
PGlass-fibre reinforced polyamide cage (e.g. in “ECP” cylindrical roller bearings)SKF

Polyamide cages have temperature limits and are sensitive to some lubricants; brass and steel cages behave differently under shock and high speed. Treat cage material as a real attribute, not cosmetic.

Bore

SuffixTypical meaning
KTapered bore, taper 1:12 (for adapter or withdrawal sleeves)
K30Tapered bore, taper 1:30 (common on wide spherical roller bearings)

Internal design and contact angle

SuffixTypical meaningTypical context
EReinforced internal design: more or larger rolling elementsCylindrical and spherical roller bearings (several makers)
ECReinforced internal design with optimised roller end/flange contactSKF cylindrical roller bearings
CCSpherical roller bearing design with pressed cages (symmetrical rollers)SKF spherical roller bearings
CASpherical roller bearing design with machined cage and centre flangeSKF spherical roller bearings
CD15° contact angleSKF super-precision angular contact bearings
B40° contact angleSingle-row angular contact ball bearings (72xx, 73xx)
BE40° contact angle, optimised internal designSKF angular contact ball bearings
AC25° contact angleAngular contact ball bearings
A30° contact angleSome double-row and angular contact designs (maker-specific)

Contact angle suffixes matter: a 7205 B and a 7205 AC have the same envelope but different axial load behaviour and stiffness.

Features and lubrication

SuffixTypical meaning
W33Annular groove and three lubrication holes in the outer ring (spherical roller bearings)
NSnap ring groove in the outer ring
NRSnap ring groove with snap ring fitted
HTHigh-temperature grease fill (manufacturer-specific grease codes)

Precision (tolerance class)

SuffixTypical meaning
(none) / P0Normal tolerance class
P6Higher precision than normal
P5Higher precision than P6
P4Higher precision than P5 (spindles, machine tools)

Precision classes describe dimensional and running accuracy. They are independent of clearance: a bearing can be P6 with C3 clearance.

For catalog and data teams

Suffix strings are among the hardest fields to compare across suppliers, because two different strings can describe the same feature and one string can hide several features. Parse them into explicit attributes — closure_type, closure_sides, internal_clearance, cage_material, bore_shape, contact_angle, precision_class — and keep the original suffix next to the parsed values. Mark anything you could not parse as unresolved rather than guessing. Our normalization page shows this pattern.
